David Gilmour zegt over het nieuwe album: “ The Endless River has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we’ve added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire.”

Nick Mason zegt: “ The Endless River is a tribute to Rick. I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. Listening back to the sessions, it really brought home to me what a special player he was.”

The Endless River is ontstaan uit de opnames van The Division Bell sessies, zoals David Gilmour al toelicht. The Division Bell (1994) is het laatst verschenen studioalbum van Pink Floyd en ging wereldwijd ruim twaalf miljoen keer over de toonbank. Het nieuwe studioalbum is voornamelijk instrumentaal, bestaat uit vier composities, achttien episodes/nummers en is een ode aan de in 2006 overleden toetsenist Rick Wright. Er staat één nummer met zang op het album, Louder Than Words . De tekst van het nummer is geschreven door Polly Samson, de vrouw van David Gilmour.

Het krachtige artwork van de albumhoes is bedacht door Ahmed Emad Eldin, een 18-jarige Egyptische digitale kunstenaar. Het awardwinnende Brits ontwerpbureau Stylorouge maakte de albumhoes van Ahmed verder af. In Londen is het artwork van The Endless River tentoongesteld op een acht meter hoge verlichte kubusinstallatie op de South Bank.

Pink Floyd’s album artwork werd meestal gemaakt door Storm Thorgerson – de eigenaar van kunstdesignstudio Hignosis – die net zo legendarisch is als de muziek van de band. Na het overlijden van Storm (2013) was het een moeilijke opdracht om een passend beeld te vinden voor The Endless River . Het artwork moest namelijk in lijn zijn met de erfenis die Storm had doorgegeven aan zijn zakelijke partner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell.

Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell zei: “When we saw Ahmed’s image it had an instant Floydian resonance. It’s enigmatic and open to interpretation, and is the cover that works so well for The Endless River.”

Een originele opname van Richard Wright tijdens de repetities, op het orgel, van de Royal Albert Hall in juni 1969 is opgenomen in de mix (Autumn’68).

Het project dateert van augustus 2012 toen David Gilmour aan Phil Manzanera gevraagd had te luisteren naar jamsessies van dat moment.

Het eerste wat opgenomen is voor dit album waren Nick’s drum onderdelen in november 2013.
Gilmour en Mason hadden precies 30 dagen nodig, om de gitaar en drumpartijen op te nemen.

Op het nummer “Talkin’ Hawkin'” is de stem te horen van Stephen Hawking, die ook te horen was bij de intro van Keep Talking (The Division Bell).
