Het nummer werd voornamelijk geschreven door David Gilmour. Het beschrijft Gilmour’s gedachten over het vliegen, waarvoor hij een passie heeft, maar het is ook geïnterpreteerd als een metafoor voor het begin van iets nieuws, het ervaren van een radicale verandering in het leven, of, meer specifiek, Gilmour’s gevoelens als de nieuwe leider van Pink Floyd na het vertrek van Roger Waters. Gilmour bevestigde de laatste interpretatie in de Pink Floyd 25th Anniversary Special (mei 1992). Ook een fervent piloot, drummer Nick Mason’s stem kun je horen rond het midden van het nummer.
