James Guthrie (geboren 14 november 1953 in Edmonton, Middlesex) is een Engels opnametechnicus en producer, die als producer en technicus voor Pink Floyd werkte sinds 1978. Hij is de eigenaar en exploitant van Das Boot Recording in Lake Tahoe, Californië.

Hij begon zijn carriere op 1 oktober 1973 bij de Mayfair Studios te London. Medio 1978 , kreeg Guthrie een verzoek van Pink Floyd’s manager , Steve O’Rourke , om hem te ontmoeten over mogelijke productie projecten.Eerst voor zanger/songwriter Tom Robinson, voor het produceren van zijn single “Our People”. De andere was voor Pink Floyd , aan het begin van hun nieuwe project: The Wall. Op basis van zijn vorige productie credits en na een ontmoeting met Guthrie , geloofde Roger Waters in zijn kunnen. Guthrie heeft de opdracht aanvaard met het verzoek dat hij zou worden toegestaan om de plaat zelf te bewerken. Guthrie ontving in 1980 de Grammy Award voor “Best Engineered Recording , Non – Classical”.

David Gilmour verklaarde in een (maart 2000) interview met Record Collector , met betrekking tot de medewerkers:”Another crucial figure is James Guthrie. The album’s wonderfully clear and punchy, and very modern-sounding.”
Nick Mason heeft ook Guthrie ’s specifieke bijdrage met betrekking om het drumgeluid erkend, in een interview met TapeOp magazine:”James Guthrie was great on The Wall – I thought he did a great job.”

Guthrie’s betrokkenheid met Pink Floyd zou bijna vijf jaar duren , in aanvulling op engineering en co – productie van de rechten op The Wall , diende hij ook als de Sound Mixer ( supervisor van het “Front of House engineering team”) tijdens meeste optredens van The Wall, zowel live als eigenlijke opname van een aantal van de concerten (hij zou later zorgen voor de mix en productie voor het album “Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall live- 1980-1981”) , alsmede Sound coördinator tijdens de verfilming van The Wall ( hij zou de muziek voor film construeren en produceren in samenwerking met Waters en Gilmour ). Guthrie kreeg een “British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award” voor “Best Film Sound” in 1982 voor zijn werk aan de film , ( samen met geluid redacteur Eddy Joseph , productie mixer Clive Winter en nasynchronisatie mixers Graham Hartstone en Nicholas Le Messurier ). Hij werd vervolgens gevraagd om co – producer(samen met Michael Kamen ) te worden bij The Final Cut , de laatste release van het Waters – tijdperk van Pink Floyd. Volgens Andy Jackson, die als ingenieur diende voor de opname, samen met Guthrie , is het gebruik van de naam “Max” in de nummers “The Gunner ’s Dream ” en ” Paranoid Eyes” een krediet aan Guthrie’s bijnaam ( de leden van het productieteam – Guthrie , Jackson en Kamen – hadden elk bijnamen ) , die Waters oorspronkelijk opgenomen als een grap, maar besloot dat het geschikt was voor het totale concept en creëerde een werkelijke karakter in het verhaal met de naam Max.

 

Guthrie verschijnt in minstens drie docu’s over Pink Floyd : in The Lost Docu mentary ( gefilmd in augustus 1980 en nooit officieel uitgebracht , maar werd in 2004 ter beschikking gesteld) , hij wordt geïnterviewd en ontvangt een krediet op het scherm als ” Sound Mixer “. In The Other Side of The Wall (chroniqueur van het maken van Pink Floyd The Wall) hij verschijnt op het scherm tijdens een opeenvolging beeltenis opnames van extra muziek voor de film, maar wordt niet bijgeschreven noch geïnterviewd, en in Retrospective : Looking Back at The Wall (meegeleverd op de DVD release van Pink Floyd – The Wall) wordt hij geïnterviewd en ontvangt een krediet op het scherm als “Music Producer ” in de tweede helft van de docu. Guthrie verschijnt ook in het “Editing and Music” featurette voor de DVD release van The Last Mimzy , in een sequentie die de opname voor het lied “Hello ( I Love You)” toont, maar is niet geïnterviewd of bijgeschreven, alsmede de muziek video geproduceerd voor het lied. Hij werd ook geïnterviewd (zonder scherm credit) voor “electronic press kit” gebruikt om de release van Pulse in 1995 te promoten.

Guthrie was primaire verantwoordelijk (tot op de dag van vandaag) over de geluidskwaliteit van Pink Floyd en Floyd-gerelateerde releases sinds 1978, en kan worden beschouwd als archiefmateriaal ingenieur van Pink Floyd.
